The London Evolution Animation

This is a stunning animation which maps the evolution of London over almost 2,000 years.

Researchers at UCL’s Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis collated vast datasets to map the capital’s transformation from first-century Londinium to modern megacity
Much of my recent theological reflection on urban youth work has started with a study of how the city works, the physical and social development and the subsequent lived experience of urban inhabitants.  If we are to find something to say to the city then we must first try to understand what it is and how it works.
I wonder what an updated version of this map will include in 20, 50 and 100 years time. Will it show the movement of wealthy residents back into the inner city? or the rapid rise in the number of chicken shops. I hope it might show how public space has become better used and that ethnicity doesn’t have such a strong connection with wealth distribution.
